List of Prime Ministers of India from 1947 to 2019 with Working Period, Party

We got independence on 15th August 1947. Since our independence, we have 15 different prime ministers. Our first prime minister was Indian National Congress’s Jawaharlal Nehru. Our present prime minister is Narendra Modi who became prime minister in the place of last prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh of UPA ( United Progressive Alliance ). Here we are going to give details on all the prime ministers of India till date.

List of Prime Ministers of India

  • Jawaharlal Nehru

The first prime minister of independent India was Jawaharlal Nehru. He played a great role in changing the thinking of India and making it modern. He has done a lot for our society. One of his greatest works are the reformation of ancient Hindu civil code. This is to permit the hindu widows to get their equal right in case of property related matters.

Work Period: 15th August 1947 to 27th May 1964, total of 16 years & 286 days.

Party: Indian National Congress.

  • Gulzarilal Nanda:

Gulzarilal Nanda was the first interim prime minister of our country.

Work Period: 27th May 1964 to 9th June 1964, for 13 days. Again at 11th January 1966 to 24th January 1966, for 13 days.

Party: Indian National Congress.

  • Lal Bahadur Shashtri:

One of the most loyal followers of Mahatma Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shashtri gave us the great slogan of Jai Jawan Jai Kishan. He was a very soft spoken person. To increase the milk production in India, he started the White Revolution.

Work Period: 9th June 1964 to 11th January 1966, total of 1 year and 216 days.

Party: Indian National Congress.

  • Indira Gandhi:

She was the first woman prime minister of India and was the pioneer of India’s win over Pakistan in 1971. She improved our relationships with neighbor countries.

Work Period: 24th January 1966 to 24th March 1977, for 11 years and 59 days. Again at 14th January 1980 to 31st October 1984, for 4 years and 291 days.

Party: Indian National Congress.

  • Morarji Desai:

He was the first non congress Indian prime minister.

Work Period: 24th March 1977 to 28th July 1979, for 2 years and 126 days.

Party: Janata Party

  • Charan Singh:

His greatest deed was as the revenue minister when he removed the Zamindari system in Uttar Pradesh.

Work Period: 28th July 1979 for 14th January 1980, for 170 days.

Party: Janata Party (Secular)

  • Rajiv Gandhi:

He was very modern and took an active role in bringing computers to India. The relationship with US improved a lot under his rule.

Work Period: 31st October 1984 to 14th January 1989, for 5 years and 32 days.

Party: Indian National Congress

  • P Singh:

He did a lot for the poor people in India.

Work Period: 2nd December 1989 to 10th November 1990, for 343 days.

Party: Janata Party

  • Chandra Sekhar

Work Period: 10th November 1990 to 21st June 1991, for 223 days.

Party: Samajwadi Janata Party

  • V. Narsimha Rao:

He was known as the father of Indian Economic Reforms. He reversed the socialist policies. Often he was referred as Chanakya for his intelligence and ability.

Work Period: 21st June 1991 to 16th May 1996, for 4 years and 330 days.

Party: Indian National Congress

  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee:

One of the finest prime ministers of India till date. For the rural areas he did a lot of things. Telecom industry saw new heights under his rule. The relationship with Pakistan became a lot better in his tenure.

Work Period: 16th May 1996 to 1st June 1996, for 16 days. Again at 19th March 1998 to 22nd May 2004, for 6 years and 64 days.

Party: Bharatiya Janata Party

  • D. Deve Gowda:

He was elected the leader of United Front Coalition Government collectively.

Work Period: 1st June 1996 to 21st April 1997, for 324 days.

Party: Janata dal

  • K. Gujral:

He helped in improving relationship with Pakistan.

Work Period: 21st April 1997 to 19th March 1998, for 332 days.

Party: Janata dal

  • Manmohan Singh:

During his tenure, the financial sector became a lot stronger. The value added tax (VAT) was added at the time. In 2005, he started the National Rural health Mission. Eight IIT’s were opened in his tenure at Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Orissa, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Work Period: 22nd May 2004 to May of 2014

  • Narendra Modi:

Since the start of his tenure, our 15th prime minister Narendra Modi is ruling with disciplined and strict rules in government. Many great policies are enforced by him like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Jan Dhan Yojana, and Clean Ganga Project.

Work Period: May of 2014 till present

Party: Bharatiya Janata Party
